This is a vintage c. 1958 stainless steel Rolex Submariner Small Crown Gilt 5508. It has the original stainless steel rivet bracelet with double deployment clasp, and an acrylic crystal. It has the rare small screw down crown with the Rolex logo, and a solid screw down case back inside of which is stamped "MONTRES ROLEX S.A. – GENEVA SWITZERLAND – PATENTED – STAINLESS STEEL – 5508." The 37.5mm diameter solid three-body case, gently curved hooded lugs, and bidirectional revolving flat black bezel, are satin/polished. The original gilt dial is in excellent condition with an even, beautiful patina, a gilt perimeter chapter ring, and gilt printing. The black bezel insert with Arabic numeral dive markers to 60 minutes was replaced. There are luminous circle, baton, and triangular hour markers, with the original "Mercedes" luminous Rolex hands, and the center sweep second hand has the small luminous lollipop indicator. It's water resistant to 200 meters/660 feet, and the 12.3mm thick case, dial, and movement are all signed. The Rolex Submariner Small Crown Gilt 5508 has a mechanical automatic Rolex caliber 1530 movement. It's rhodium-plated with fausses cotes embellishment, and it's constructed with 26 jewels, a shock absorber device, and a straight-line lever escapement. It includes a monometallic balance that's adjusted for temperature and to 5 positions, a self-compensating Breguet balance spring, and Microstella regulating screws. Introduced in 1954, the 5508 became known as the original "James Bond" watch.
