More about Vintage UG "Evil Nina" Compax Chronograph

This is a vintage mid-1960's stainless steel Universal Geneve Compax Chronograph “Evil Nina” 885103/01. It has a black leather rally style strap with a stainless steel tang buckle, and an acrylic crystal. It has a screw down signed winding crown, round chronograph push buttons, and a solid screw down case back. The 38mm diameter solid three-body case, curved lyre lugs, and fixed flat black aluminum bezel with a white tachymeter scale to 500 UPH, are polished/brushed. The dial is black with white rectangular luminous tritium baton hour indices around a perimeter luminous white minute/one-fifth second scale. It has tapered steel baton hands with luminous inserts, and there is a crimson red center sweep chronograph seconds hand with luminous fill on the tip. It includes the rare “Panda” variant recessed subsidiary dials with black Arabic numerals, markers, and steel indicator hands with luminous inserts, including a running small constant seconds register at 9 o’clock, a 12-hour chronograph totalizer at 6 o’clock, and there is a 30-minute totalizer at the 3 o’clock position. It has a 48-hour power reserve at full winding, and the 12.5mm thick case, dial, and movement are all signed. This Universal Geneve Compax Chronograph “Evil Nina” 885103/01 has a mechanical manual winding Universal Geneve UG caliber 85 (base Valjoux caliber 72) column wheel chronograph movement (the same movement that’s in the vintage Rolex Daytona). It's rhodium-plated, and it's constructed with 17 jewels, a shock absorber device, and a straight-line lever escapement. It includes a monometallic balance, and a self-compensating flat balance spring. The mechanism oscillates at a frequency of 18,000 vph (2.5 Hz). The Universal Geneve Compax Chronograph “Evil Nina” 885103/01 was introduced in the mid-1960's. It gained the nickname Evil Nina because it's the black-dialed counterpart to a cream-colored chronograph worn by Finnish model (and widow of Formula 1 driver Jochen Rindt) Nina Rindt. Nina wasn’t evil – only this variant of her namesake watch because it’s black.
